The History of Puthoor Family (Puthooran) dates back to A.D 52, when St. Thomas made his debut visit to Kodungalloor, where the inhabitant Jews community attacked him. Kerala, in that century was under the reign of Chera Dynasty and was ruled by the king Cheraman Perumal.
Palayoor, a renowned business centre in Chavakkad taluk of 40 miles away from Kodungalloor, was the residing place of the ancient families of Pakalomattom, Sankarapuri, Kalli and Kalikavu. These god fearing families were believed to be once the inheritor’s of the Aryan Brahmins who hailed from the northern part of India. St. Thomas baptized and honored them as preceptors, which they later became known as Marthoma Syrian Christians. Due to various family conflicts, the Pakalomattom Family migrated their base to Angamaly and few among them became Archdeacons thereafter and administered the Marthoma Community.
In the beginning of the 15th century, one family among them was brought to Mutholapuram and made to stay at Kattrethu compound, the Northern side of Kavattumana to help in the Pooja activities at the Mudhevar ( 3 gods) Temple.
The 2nd son among them named Mathan was shifted to Kalathukulangara, and Mathan’s 3rd son Iype moved to Elanji-Vattamkandathil. After that Iype’s 2nd son, Kurian in AD 1770 got married to Annam of Puthoor and thereafter resided at Mulakulam. This lovely couple was blessed with 3 children named Kurian, Itti Maniand Sara. Kurian’s Inheritors formed the Puthookattil, Puthookudilil and Kuppel Family. The 2nd son, Itti Mani got married to Annam (Acharu) of Chemmanam Family and was blessed with one son, Kurian. This Kurian later married Aley from Vettickal-ElayedathuFamily and got Eleven Children. The 2 kids among them expired at a very early age and 3 girl children were married off young.
